A toriconical head is a flanged cone: a conical body with a knuckle radius at the base where it meets the shell, rather than a sharp cone-to-cylinder junction. That knuckle is what distinguishes it from a plain conical head, and its radius is set relative to the head diameter. The shape is used where a vessel needs to funnel material toward an outlet while transitioning smoothly to a cylindrical wall, which is why toriconical heads are common on hoppers, silos, and process vessels with bottom discharge.
At Tank Components Industries, we form toriconical heads in stainless steel and nickel alloys, built to your specified dimensions.
Toriconical Head Specifications
- Diameters available from 9″ through 120″
- Material thicknesses from 10 gauge through 3/8″
- Included angles available from 90 to 150 degrees
- Knuckle radius dependent on diameter
- Manufactured to either inside diameter (ID) or outside diameter (OD)
Materials and Alloys
Every toriconical head we produce is formed from stainless steel or an exotic alloy. Our alloy offerings for this head include Hastelloy® and AL6XN.
Finishes and Weld Preparation
Heads are available polished on the inside surface, the outside surface, or both, ranging from 80 grit through 320 grit (5–10 Ra). We also supply weld preps including tapers, bevels, and lands, so the head can be specified to match how it will be joined to the shell.
ASME Pressure Vessel Heads
The toriconical head is one of our ASME pressure vessel head options, alongside ASME flanged and dished, 80:10, 80:6, 2:1 elliptical, and hemispherical profiles. Tank Components Industries is ASME certified.
Nozzle Openings and Custom Cutting
If your toriconical head needs nozzle penetrations before it reaches your shop, our 5-axis waterjet cutting capability lets us cut or etch nozzle locations directly into the head, which removes layout and processing time from your build. Send us your CAD file and we handle the rest.
Why Fabricators Choose Tank Components Industries
We are ASME certified and have manufactured tank components in-house since 2000, in a 100,000 square foot facility. Tank Components Industries is the only exclusive stainless steel and nickel alloy components manufacturer in the industry that does not compete with you by building tanks. We leave that to you, and partner instead with the fabricators and OEMs we supply across the industries we serve, including pharmaceutical, chemical, biotech, cryogenic, extraction, and food and beverage.
If a toriconical profile is not the right fit for your vessel, we manufacture the full range of alternatives, including conical heads, hemispherical heads, and 2:1 elliptical heads.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is a toriconical head?
It is a conical tank head with a knuckle radius at the base, where the cone transitions to the cylindrical shell. The knuckle replaces the sharp junction found on a plain conical head.
Q. What is the difference between a toriconical head and a conical head?
A conical head meets the shell at a sharp angle. A toriconical head adds a curved knuckle radius and straight flange at that junction, giving a smoother transition to the cylinder.
Q. Is the toriconical head an ASME head?
Yes. The toriconical is one of our ASME pressure vessel head options, along with ASME flanged and dished, 80:10, 80:6, 2:1 elliptical, and hemispherical heads. Tank Components Industries is ASME certified.
Q. What sizes of toriconical heads do you manufacture?
We produce diameters from 9″ through 120″ in thicknesses from 10 gauge through 3/8″, with included angles from 90 to 150 degrees. The knuckle radius is set relative to the diameter.
Q. What materials are available?
Our toriconical heads are made from stainless steel or exotic alloys, including Hastelloy® and AL6XN.
Q. Can I order the head with a specific polish?
Yes. We polish inside, outside, or both surfaces from 80 grit through 320 grit (5–10 Ra).
